Derrick Henry: Diet, Maintenance, & Performance

Derrick Henry

Athletes are challenging beliefs placed not only placed on themselves, but by others. We have the pleasure watching it take place in real time. NFL star, Derrick Henry, Running Back of the Baltimore Ravens. He is proof limiting beliefs are an obstacle to overcome.

Leading the NFL in touchdowns, carries, and yards, Henry has been an unstoppable force.

PN released statistics of performance deterioration in Henry’s position after age 29.

In the 2023 season, he had 12 touchdowns and 1,167 yards in 17 games ranking amongst the top 3 running backs.

This season he has 8 touchdowns and 704 yards in only 6 games.

He is 30 years old.

Henry spends $240,000 yearly on body maintenance. What can almost a quarter million of body maintenance look like?

  • Personal chef
  • Diet
  • Cold therapy
  • Infrared Sauna
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen
  • Massage therapy
  • Trainers

Henry crafted a routine that’s contributed towards his elite performances. What’s not apart of this plan is the psychological aspect, and this isn’t something you can put a price on.

His love for the game and strive for constant improvement is his psychological edge. He added, “If I am going to spend time somewhere, it probably will be a gym because that’s what I love doing.”

Combining physical prowess and love for improvement is a recipe for success. This is a lesson for all us to see if our passions are in sync with our actions.

Naval Ravikant, entrepreneur and investor touches on this subject. “I’m always ‘working.’ It looks like work to others, but it feels like play to me. And that’s how I know no one can compete with me on it. Because I’m just playing, for sixteen hours a day. If others want to compete with me, they’re going to work, and they’re going to lose because they’re not going to do it for sixteen hours a day, seven days a week.”

You can’t compete with the person who doesn’t see work as work.

High Quality Nutrition for High Quality Performance

Nutrition is always a step in the right direction for improvement. He provided some insight on his diet.

  • Kale, avocado, or banana before practice
  • Avoids fried food, gluten, dairy, and artificial sugars.
  • Bigger meals include 3 chicken breasts, rice, broccoli, gluten-free pancakes, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes, home fries, and steak.

A high protein and carbohydrate is necessary for the physical demands. Eliminating fried and processed foods is a game changer for everyone. Elite training and recovery isn’t enough, nutrition still plays a vital part.

Negative consequences build from the constant consumption of fried and processed foods. Inflammatory responses in the body lead to a myriad of sicknesses. This cuts seed oils out of the situation. A toxic ingredient on most food labels of which damages our cells. An area we will discuss more on further nutritional topics.

As humans we seek development by trying to add more. The process of subtraction is equally important. Check out my previous blog as I touch more on this. To update your phone, you delete useless data to make space for the download. As a human, we need to rid ourselves of old beliefs to make space for the new and evolved ones. In this case, cutting out foods with a negative consequence to make way for the better health and performance.

You shouldn’t allow your current situation to determine your worth. A specific data set shouldn’t stop you from being the best in the world, like the example above.

Henry loves what he does, and he developed a routine that allowed him to improve every single day. Nobody competes with the man who sees work as play.

You’re capable of more than you think. Find the environment you to flourish in. There’s proof all around us of what’s possible.
